On November 2, Iryna Gurevych, former President of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL), Fellow of Academia Europaea, Fellow of the German National Academy of Sciences, and Professor at Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany, visited Southwest Petroleum University for a lecture upon invitation. Zhang Zhi, Member of the Standing Committee of SWPU Party Committee and SWPU Vice President, held a meeting with Iryna Gurevych.

Zhang Zhi expressed his hope to strengthen cooperation and exchange with Darmstadt University of Technology to cultivate high-level international talent jointly.

Professor Iryna Gurevych praised highly SWPU’s rich academic atmosphere and robust research capabilities. She was pleased to take this opportunity to facilitate further cooperation and ties between Darmstadt University of Technology and Southwest Petroleum University in talent cultivation and scientific research, thereby advancing mutual collaboration.

Zhang Zhi presented Professor Iryna Gurevych with cultural gifts with Sichuan's characteristics and expressed his anticipation for future collaboration.

After the meeting, Professor Iryna Gurevych delivered a lecture to SWPU faculty and students, sharing insights on the current state and future trends of “AI for Science”. She provided a detailed overview of her research team's work in leveraging large language models to transform scientific research paradigms. The presentation was rich in detail and featured compelling case studies, sparking keen interest among attendees. SWPU Faculty and students engaged in in-depth discussions with Professor Gurevych on heated topics, including the capabilities and limitations of artificial intelligence, large model security, interdisciplinary applications, and the academic ethics of AI for Science. This exchange fostered a deeper understanding of the potentials of large models in cross-disciplinary integration, while also showcasing the audience's sharp insights into cutting-edge technology and their academic enthusiasm.

Heads of SWPU School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Scientific Research Institute, Office of International Cooperation & Exchange and State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Exploration attended the meeting.
