Enrollment Plan

The College of Petroleum University is an important institute for training high-quality professionals, developing scientific and technological innovation for the oil & natural gas industry.

The college has a long history of more than 58 years. In 1958, it began to recruit its first group of oil drilling and exploitation undergraduate students. In 1978, "Oil & Gas Field Exploitation Engineering" discipline recruited the first batch of postgraduates. In 1986, it were authorized to recruit doctoral students. Later in 1988, "Oil & Gas Field Exploitation Engineering (combined with the Petroleum Mechanical Engineering)" became the first batch of national key discipline. In 1991, the "geological, mining, petroleum post-doctoral research station" was established. In 2002, the second-rate discipline "Oil & Gas drilling Engineering" was approved to be the national key discipline. In 2007, the first-class discipline "Oil and Natural Gas Engineering" was approved to be a national key discipline. In 2013, "Offshore Oil & Gas Engineering" major was approved to recruit the doctor and the master. In the 2002 to 2004 Annual National Discipline Assessment, our Oil and Natural Gas Engineering discipline ranked first, and in 2004 to 2006 and 2009 to 2011 assessments ranked second.

The college has more than 30 teaching and research laboratories at national, provincial and ministerial level, such as the State Key Laboratory of Oil & Gas Reservoir Geology of Exploitation and the National Experimental and Teaching Demonstration Center. The distinctive characteristic "Synchronously lift oil and gas, with gas featured" of the subject has been formed. A solid accumulation of research and unique advantages are also shown in the directions such as Drilling and Completion of Deep and Ultra-deep wells, Natural Gas Development and Production, Production Improvement and Revamp of Complex Oil and Gas Field, Natural Gas Gathering, Storage and Transportation.

Now 5708 students are studying in the college, including doctors, postgraduates and undergraduates. In China Petroleum Engineering Design Competitions, International Academic Thesis Competition, National Skill Competitions and other important events, the students had excellent performance and ranked in the forefront among the Chinese universities of this discipline.

Prof. Pingya Luo and Shouwei Zhou, the academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, leads the tutor staff team. The tutor staff team is made up of two winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 3 professors specially appointed by Changjiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education, 70 national and provincial academic and technical experts, etc. Among the teachers, there are 45 doctoral supervisors and 151 master tutors. Most of the teachers have the experiences of visiting and studying abroad, international academic exchanges and international scientific research cooperation.

The scientific researches significantly promote the quality of classroom teaching . During the China 12th Five-Year Plan period, the college had an annual research fund of 186 million RMB, including 12 items of the "973 Projects" and "863 Projects", and 65 items of the Natural Science Foundation of China. The research results had won 2 grand prizes and 4 second prizes of the National Scientific and Technology Progress, 2 second prize of the National Technology Invention, 1 prize of the Excellent Chinese Patent, 19 first prizes and 28 second prizes of the provincial and ministerial level awards. 112 authorized invention patents were obtained. More than 350 papers were published in the Science Citation Index (SCI) journals; more than 300 papers were published in engineering Index (EI) journals; more than 500 articles were published in the Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD) journals. A total of 53 monographs and teaching materials were published. The national projected teaching materials with the latest scientific achievements, and the national, provincial and ministerial level courses represent the development frontier of the discipline in China.

Persisting in the education and teaching reform, our teaching achievements have won 2 first prizes and 2 second prizes in the National Outstanding Teaching Achievement, 6 first prizes and 5 second prizes in Sichuan Province Outstanding Teaching Achievement.

According to the professional training objectives and training programs for the undergraduate, the college actively promotes and improves the seven training plans:

I. Classified and hierarchical training plan. Combined with the students' desire of employment and the need of individual development, "Innovation Class", "International Classes" and "Brilliant (engineers) Class" are set up according to the characteristics of the different majors.

II. The Second-class upgrade plan. Implement the class-tutor system, and personal academic tutor system. Offer students the chance to join the teachers’ research teams and the laboratories to enhance their innovation and practical ability.

III. Practice ability training plan. Cooperating with the three major oil companies and local enterprises, practice bases outside the university are established to offer a good opportunity for the students. They can be trained outside the college that improves the training quality of the students’ engineering practice application ability.

IV. The international joint training program. Through the "International Study Tour", "3+2", "1+2+1", "1+2" and other modes to implement the joint training program with famous foreign universities and international oil companies to enhance students' international capacity.

V. The comprehensive quality improvement plan. A series of activities, such as the Oil and Gas Elite Quality Development Training Camp, Oil and Gas Elite Lecture, SPE Culture Festival and Petroleum Culture Festival are hold to train the students’ teamwork ability and improve the comprehensive quality.

VI. Enhancing English Ability Program. Encourage and support students to participate in the National English Contest. Hold English spelling contest, English speech contest, abroad English training and other activities to enhance students' English level and offer a good opportunity for cultivating top international talents.

VII. Specific training for excellent students. Outstanding undergraduates can study for the master degree through the examination-free recommendation or directly study for the doctor degree.

The graduated students work in different companies, different fields and different countries. About 40% students work in the three major national oil companies, more than 30% continue for the master degree study, 10% students study abroad, 15% students work at the local or private oil enterprise, and 5% students start a business on their own.

Petroleum Engineering

Supported by the two national key disciplines "Oil and Gas Well Engineering" and "Oil and Gas Field Exploitation Engineering", the college has the top-ranking ability to train the students.

Training Objective:

The training program of this major is in accordance with the economic globalization and the need of the national petroleum industry development. It aims to train the advanced technical engineering talents with comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical ability and culture, with good understanding of basic science theories, and with practical ability in the engineering, proficient foreign language and computer skills. Through the courses, students are supposed to grasp the systematic theories of oil and gas engineering, gain the basic training skills of the field engineer, and get the abilities to cooperate with a team and adapt well to the internationalization. After graduation, students should possess the capability to do related work such as the engineering design and construction, application research and scientific development, operating management in the oil and gas industry. According to the students’ learning ability and the desire for further development, "Innovation Class", "International Class", "Brilliant (engineers) Class" are set up to meet the demands proposed by the oil and gas industry.

This major provides the bachelor degree, master degree and doctor degree. It has 2 PH. D programs that are the Oil & Gas Field Exploitation Engineering and Oil & Gas Well Engineering, and 3 Master's degree programs that are the Oil and Gas Field Exploitation Engineering, Oil & Gas Well Engineering, Oil and Natural Gas Engineering (professional degree).

Career Direction:

The graduated students could do technical and management work in the international petroleum companies, offshore and onshore oil and gas field enterprises, research and plan institutes of oil exploration & exploitation engineering , oil field service and engineering construction companies, such as Daqing Oilfield, Shengli Oilfield, Changqing Oilfield, Yanchang Petroleum, Tarim Oilfield, Southwest Oil & Gas Field Branch Company, CNOOC Tianjin Branch Company, CNOOC Zhanjiang Branch Company, CNOOC Shenzhen Branch Company, CNOOC Shanghai Branch Company, Chuanqing Drilling Company, Great Wall Drilling Company, Western Drilling Company, North China Petroleum Bureau, TOTAL, Baker Hughes, Schlumberger, Shell, Weatherford, Anton Oil, etc.

Training object:

After four years of schooling, the full-time undergraduates are granted a bachelor degree in engineering. The candidates should be healthy, their spine can’t be severely bent, and the lower limb should not be too deformity to move.

Oil & Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering

Supported by the national key discipline "Oil & Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering", the college has the top-ranking ability to train the students.

Training Objective:

The training program of this major is in accordance with the economic globalization and the need of the national petroleum industry development. It aims to train the advanced technical engineering talents with comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical ability and culture, with good understanding of engineering basic theories of the Oil & Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering. Through the courses, students are supposed to gain the basic training skills of the Oil & Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering professionals, form the good engineering awareness and scientific literacy. After graduation, students should have the capabilities to do the oil & gas storage and transportation work, including engineering design, construction, management, technical development and application research. The work opportunities of the oil & gas storage and transportation are provided by the national, provincial or civic development project, transportation, civic fuel gas, petroleum and petrochemical, and national defense department. According to the students’ learning ability and the desire for further development, "Standard Class" and "Brilliant (engineers) Class" are set up to meet the demands proposed by the oil and gas industry.

Offshore Oil & Gas Engineering

Training Objective:

The training program of this major is in accordance with the development of national offshore petroleum industry. It aims to train the advanced technical engineering talents with comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical ability and culture, with strong international competitiveness, and with ability for team cooperation in the drilling, production, program management. Through the courses, students are required to have the understanding of the engineering basic theories and basic maritime laws, and be familiar with the professional knowledge of offshore drilling, completion, oil recovery, oil and gas gathering and transportation. The students are also needed to possess the ability to fluently use the foreign language, and be qualified for the design, engineering construction and management of the offshore drilling and completion, offshore oil and gas recovery, and offshore oil and gas gathering and transportation.

The graduated students could do the technical and management work in the related oil and gas enterprises such as multinational oil companies, offshore oil companies, oil exploration, development and program institutions, oilfield service and engineering construction departments.
