There are 1 first class of national key discipline and 3 second class of national disciplines, 1 first class discipline authorized a Doctor's degree-level, 4 second class disciplines authorized a Doctor's degree-level, 2 first class disciplines authorized a Master's degree-level, 5 second class disciplines authorized a Master's degree-level.
The first class of national key discipline Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering originated from drilling well and oil exploiting from Southwest Petroleum University, which was founded in 1958 as second petroleum university.
In 1978, the discipline of oil and gas field development began to enroll graduate students, and in 1986 it was approved to recruit doctoral students, then became national key discipline. In1990, oil and gaswell engineering started to recruit master and doctoral. In 1991, the Post-doctoral studies stations of Geology and mining and oil was established. In 2002, oil and gas well engineering, ranked as second-class, was approved as national discipline. In 2007, Oil and gas engineering, ranked as second-class, was approved as national discipline. Then, oil and gas storage and transportation engineering becomes national key discipline.
Oil and gas engineering discipline administered 6 PhD programs: oil and gas well engineering, oil and gas field development projects, oil and gas storage and transportation engineering, offshore oil and gas engineering, petroleum engineering management (SEM hospital construction) and Petroleum Engineering Computing Technology (College of Construction ); 5 master's degree authorization managements: oil and gas well engineering, oil and gas field exploitation project, master (engineering oil and gas storage and transportation engineering, offshore oil and gas engineering, oil and gas engineering, professional degree).
In 2011, bachelor professional named offshore oil and gas engineering began to enrolland become a national strategic emerging industry professional. In 2013, offshoreoil and gas projects were approved to recruit doctors and masters. In addition, the second-class discipline hydrodynamic has been constructed and began to recruit graduate students.
Undergraduate Petroleum Engineering, Oil & Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering has achieved the national specialty disciplines.
Oil & Gas Engineering discipline ranked the first place in disciplinary assessment from 2002 to 2004, in 2004 to 2006 ranked second, and in 2009 to 2011 ranked second again.
