Recently, the Ministry of Education announced the results for Chinese-foreign cooperative education institutions and programs. “SWPU-Russian School of Geological Energy College”, established in collaboration with the Russian State University of Geological Exploration named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze, has been approved. This school, focusing on the field of geological energy, marks the first Chinese-foreign cooperative education institution in western China. It signifies a new phase in SWPU's internationalization efforts and will provide robust talent support for serving the national energy strategy.
“SWPU-Russian School of Geological Energy” closely aligned with China's “Dual-Carbon” goals and energy transition requirements, and is positioned to cultivate high-level, interdisciplinary talents with an international perspective, serving the nation's energy security strategy. As a key training base for energy professionals in western China, the school will center on cultivating globally competitive talents for shale gas and new energy development. By leveraging Russia's strengths in Arctic oil and gas exploration and deep drilling technologies, it will empower Chinese energy enterprises to expand internationally while providing intellectual support for western China's energy industry upgrade, and dedicates to the energy cooperation vision of the Belt and Road Initiative.
The school offers two undergraduate programs: Petroleum Engineering and Geology. Students complete their 4-year study in China. Faculty from both China and Russia jointly deliver major courses, practical training, and some Russian courses, and thereby forming a distinctive curriculum framework centered on “theoretical foundations + international frontiers + Chinese practice”. Admissions are integrated into the national undergraduate enrollment plan. Applicants must take the National College Entrance Examination (Gaokao) and meet relevant admission regulations and requirements. The school plans to enroll 70 students per major annually, totaling 140 students across both programs, and the total enrollment across all 4 grades will reach 560 students. Upon completion of their studies, students will receive a bachelor's degree certificate and academic diploma issued by the Chinese institution, along with a bachelor's degree certificate issued by the Russian institution that is identical to those awarded to Russian students. This enables Chinese students to realize the dream of “studying in Russia without leaving China”.
