From October 14 to 16, the 2025 SPE Asia Pacific Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition (APOGCE) and the SPE Asia Pacific Regional Student Paper Contest were held in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Wu Yutong, a 2023 master’s student from Southwest Petroleum University, won the Postgraduate Division Championship with her paper Using Generative Neural Networks for Surrogate Modeling of Hydraulic Fracture Propagation in Complex Geological Formations. She will represent SPE Asia Pacific Region to attend the SPE Global Student Paper Contest in Houston, Texas, USA, in October 2026.
Wu Liansong, a 2025 doctoral student, and Gou Xiaoyu, a 2025 master's student, secured 4th place in the Postgraduate and Undergraduate Divisions respectively. Li Pei, a 2024 master's student, and Chen Xin, a 2025 master's student, were awarded the Excellence Prize in the Postgraduate Division.
The SPE Asia Pacific Regional Paper Contest is an official academic exchange platform established by SPE for young students. It aims to cultivate a cohort of petroleum industry professionals with strong innovative capabilities who can meet the demands of economic and social development. The contest encourages petroleum majors to develop their competencies actively, including scientific research, academic exchange, communication skills, and international collaboration capabilities.
According to statistics, since SWPU students first participated in the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Asia Pacific Petroleum Conference and Exhibition and the SPE Global Petroleum Conference and Exhibition in 2012, one undergraduate student has won the global championship in the Undergraduate Division, two undergraduates have won the Asia Pacific championship in the Undergraduate Division, and 4 graduate students have won the Asia Pacific championship in the Postgraduate Division.
