报告题目: Potential Valorisation of Red Mud Tailings
报告人:Prof. Dr. Mira Vukčević, PhD Supervisor
Full Professor, Faculty of Metallurgy and Technology, University of Montenegro
摘要:Red mud, a highly alkaline byproduct of the alumina industry, is globally recognized as one of the most challenging industrial wastes due to its massive volume and environmental risks associated with its storage. In Montenegro, significant research efforts have been made to turn red mud from an environmental liability into a valuable resource. This presentation offers a comprehensive overview of the valorisation potential of red mud, with a particular emphasis on Montenegrin research initiatives.
The first part of the presentation will detail the technology behind the development of red-mud based geopolymers and hybrid geopolymers, highlighting their promise as innovative, sustainable materials for the construction industry. The second part will showcase Montenegrin experience in using red-mud based geopolymers as efficient adsorbents for wastewater purification, presenting experimental results and practical implications. In addition, the cascade valorisation of red mud—including recent attempts at recovering rare earth elements and lanthanides—will be discussed, underlining the broader significance for critical raw material supply. The talk will also mention new perspectives on utilizing red mud for soil amelioration, which could further mitigate environmental risks and create added value. Altogether, these strategies reflect a shift towards circular economy approaches in Montenegro, offering a model for sustainable resource management and environmental protection.

She holds a BSc in Metallurgy from the University Veljko Vlahović in Podgorica (1979–1984), an MSc in Technical Sciences from the University of Belgrade (1987–1990), and a PhD in Technical Sciences from the University of Montenegro (1990–1993). Since 1985, she has been engaged at the Faculty of Metallurgy and Technology, where she was promoted to full professor in 2015. Over her distinguished career, she has served three terms as Dean of the Faculty, as well as Vice Rector for International Cooperation at the University of Montenegro, where she was responsible for international projects, strategic planning, and academic leadership.
Prof. Vukčević has coordinated nearly 30 structural and scientific projects, focusing on education, sustainable development, technology transfer, and international cooperation. She has participated in national strategy development for sustainable development, lifelong learning, and qualification frameworks in Montenegro. Her research interests center on sustainable valorisation of industrial waste (especially red mud), the development of geopolymers and hybrid materials, and the recovery of strategic elements from waste. She is the author or co-author of more than 60 scientific papers, with notable publications on the properties and applications of red-mud based geopolymers and advanced construction materials.
She has been involved in more than a hundred international conferences, and is a member of various professional organizations including the European Materials Research Society, American Powder Metallurgy Institute, and editorial boards for journals in materials science and environmental protection. Prof. Vukčević has also led several international and bilateral projects (including HORIZON 2020 and COST actions) on ecological materials, circular economy, and resource recovery. Her career is distinguished by her leadership in higher education reform and her pioneering research in sustainable materials.
